Paired set of polylobed plates with decoration of a flowering garden and birds
Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1740–1750
China ( Jingdezhen kilns ), commissioned porcelain for the European market (British East India Company)
Hard paste porcelain; underglaze blue cobalt with overglaze polychrome enamels of the Rose (Famille Rose) and gold highlights on the glaze
1 : 22.5 cm in diameter x 2.5 cm height
2 : 22.5 cm in diameter x 2.3 cm height
This ensemble bears witness to the golden age of porcelain trade between China and the West. It offers an excellent example of the stylistic transition where the taste for blue-and-red Imari gradually gives way to the infinite and luminous palette of Famille Rose enamels, highly prized by European aristocracy in the mid-18th century.
This pair of octagonal plates with slightly wavy borders (polylobed) perfectly illustrates the so‑called 'Chine-Imari' porcelain, enriched with the delicate nuances of Famille Rose. This hybrid style combines the chromatic structure of Japanese Imari (cobalt blue, iron red and gold) with the introduction of the opaque pink and violet enamels developed under the reign of the Yongzheng emperor and widely disseminated under Qianlong.
The main scene centers around a prominent Chinese garden rock (scholar’s rock), painted in an intense, nuanced cobalt blue. From this rock spring rich, winding branches of peonies in full bloom, executed with pink, white and green enamels of great freshness. On the left, a blue cobalt fence or terrace bears pierced swastika motifs, a traditional symbol of good omen and eternity in China. Two long-beaked birds, resembling cranes or stylized herons (symbols of longevity and purity), animate the foreground composition.
The marli (the border) is separated from the basin by a geometric blue lattice frieze with floral reserves. The outer decoration repeats alternating garlands of flowers (stylized peonies and lotuses) and blue wave-like or draped motifs inspired by ‘Imari’, all framed by a fine border painted with iron red on the outer filet.
Very good condition for mid-18th-century usable pieces. The Famille Rose enamels maintain their freshness, relief and original liveliness. Minor normal wear to the original gilding, particularly on the barrier contours and the flower veins.
The back shows a monochrome white-bluish glaze typical of Jingdezhen production of this period, with small firing dots present.
Some edge nicks on the outer periphery (wing tips), with no structural impact on the integrity of the pieces. No restoration or major cracks visible. UV checked.
