Exhibition catalogue published by FOIL in 2012 for Yoshitomo Nara’s major exhibition “a bit like you and me...”, held at the Yokohama Museum of Art, the Aomori Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto. This catalogue presents a significant body of new works by one of Japan’s most internationally recognised contemporary artists. It includes paintings, drawings and sculptural works, showing a quieter and more introspective side of Nara’s practice. His familiar childlike figures appear with a wide range of emotions: defiant, melancholic, fragile and contemplative. The exhibition title, taken from The Beatles’ song “Nowhere Man”, reflects Nara’s interest in the relationship between the artist, the artwork and the viewer. Rather than simple alter egos, the figures in these works seem to stand independently, creating a direct and emotional connection with the audience. An important catalogue from a key moment in Nara’s career, especially interesting for collectors of Japanese contemporary art, artist books and Yoshitomo Nara publications.
