Bruyère - Sin precio de reserva - Pipa - Brezo

Antique French Briar (Bruyère) Figural Pipe – Carved "Bedouin Sheikh" Head Material: Briar root (bruyère) bowl carved in the round as a bearded man's head, fitted to a black vulcanite stem. Marks: Likely from the same "Bruyère – FINE" grade line as your other pipes (stamp not visible in these images — worth checking the shank underside). Subject/Carving: The bowl is carved as a bearded male head wearing a draped head-covering (keffiyeh-style) secured by a twisted rope/plaited band carved in relief across the forehead. Features include deeply hollowed eye sockets with carved pupils, a strong straight nose, furrowed brow, and a heavily textured beard rendered in a stippled/pitted finish to suggest curled hair — distinct from the smoother, mustached "Turk" figural type. The overall character reads as a Bedouin sheikh or desert elder rather than an Ottoman figure, likely part of a series of "ethnic head" pipes popular in this period. Provenance/Age: Consistent with French/Belgian briar figural carving of the early-to-mid 20th century; hand-finished detail (individually carved eyes, textured beard) suggests a higher-grade artisan piece rather than mass press-molded production. Condition: Very good estate condition. Rich aged patina to the briar with warm honey-to-umber tones. Some expected small chips/roughness at the base of the beard (period wear, not structural damage). Vulcanite stem shows light oxidation/fading typical of age, with a small chip at the bit end — cosmetic, does not affect fit. Functions: Yes — fully functional smoking pipe.
