The medal was issued on December 6, 1993, by the Brăila Museum, to mark the 625th anniversary of the first documentary mention of Brăila, a port city on the Danube in southeastern Romania. The reverse side features a bronze icon of Saint Nicholas the Hierarch—a great wonderworker. The icon was consecrated by a council of priests on the morning of that day in front of the Holy Archangels Church in Brăila, during an elaborate ceremony attended by the Late Bishop of Lower Danube Antim Nica, and a group of 40 priests from the cities of Brăila and Galați. Saint Nicholas is revered as a powerful intercessor in prayer for the healing of the sick and for the protection of travelers, sailors, and those in peril. The saint is also known as the protector of children, the downtrodden, and families facing financial hardship or adversity.
