Mask - Nepal - 1960-1970 - Máscara pintada de Ganesha

This is a handcrafted Tibetan elephant-headed god Ganesha mask, carved from a single piece of wood by artisans in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. Ganesha is a core protector deity in Hinduism and Tibetan Himalayan culture, responsible for wisdom, wealth, and overcoming obstacles. It is a classic subject in Himalayan folk rituals, temple ceremonies, and folk prayers, possessing significant regional religious historical value. The entire mask is carved from a single piece of natural hardwood, without any splicing or patching. The top features a complex, openwork flame crown. The three-dimensional third eye on the forehead, the cloud-patterned eyebrows and eyes, the long elephant trunk, and the wide ears are all hand-carved in varying depths of relief, with lines that are ancient and weighty. It is painted with local natural mineral pigments in layers, combined with partial gilding. The overall design has been treated with a smoke-weathering process to create a warm, vintage, and aged texture, with the colors naturally fading over time. The openwork design of the eyes originates from the traditional needs of wearing the mask in ritual ceremonies. Multiple hanging holes on the back, along with a natural cotton cord, allow for direct wall display. The wooden core is stable, free from insect infestation, large cracks, and repairs. The carved patterns are intact and undamaged. The mineral pigments and gilding retain their original wear and tear, fully preserving the original craftsmanship characteristics of traditional Nepalese wooden sculptures.
