The negative supplied the starting point; the darkroom became his studio. In this remarkable print, Joseph has intentionally driven the background into deep shadow, allowing the swimmers to emerge like apparitions from the darkness. A row of perfectly poised figures leans forward in rhythmic unison before the lead diver breaks formation, disappearing into an ethereal burst of reflected light. The result is less a documentary photograph than a lyrical study of movement, momentum and meticulously measured light.
