Descripción del vendedor

Roman Bronze Peacock Candle Holder – 1st to 3rd Century AD

An exceptional Roman bronze candle holder or wall-mounted lamp support, masterfully cast with the elegant figure of a peacock beneath an elaborate openwork foliate ornament. The composition combines practical function with refined decorative artistry, featuring a projecting socket designed to support a candle or small lamp, while the lower curved hook served for hanging or securing additional elements. The rear mounting peg indicates that the piece was originally fixed to a wooden support, furniture element or architectural fitting.

The peacock, rendered with a gracefully arched neck, prominent beak and carefully modeled head, held profound symbolic significance throughout the Roman world. Associated with immortality, renewal and divine protection, it was particularly connected with Juno and frequently employed in luxury domestic furnishings and sacred contexts. The elegant openwork leaf above the bird further enhances the decorative quality of the piece, reflecting the sophisticated bronze-working traditions of the Roman Imperial period.

The surface displays an attractive archaeological green patina with areas of mineral encrustation accumulated over centuries, preserving the original casting details while giving the object remarkable historical character. Decorative bronze fittings of this quality were expensive household accessories, intended to adorn the residences of wealthy families, villas or small sanctuaries throughout the Empire.

An impressive and highly decorative example of Roman bronze craftsmanship, combining symbolism, elegance and functionality in a beautifully preserved architectural fitting.
