Descripción del vendedor
Roman Bronze Seal Ring – 1st to 3rd Century AD
A well-preserved Roman bronze seal ring, dating to the 1st to 3rd Century AD. The ring features a robust tapering hoop that expands into an oval bezel engraved directly with a series of stylized linear motifs or monogram-like symbols. Unlike gemstone intaglios, this example is engraved directly into the bronze bezel, a form commonly employed for personal seal rings throughout the Roman Empire.
Seal rings played an essential role in Roman daily life, functioning both as items of personal adornment and as practical instruments for sealing correspondence, legal documents, and containers with wax impressions. The engraved device would have identified its owner, often representing initials, personal symbols, or abbreviated inscriptions rather than elaborate figural scenes.
The bronze surface displays an attractive smooth olive-brown patina developed over nearly two millennia, while the engraved decoration remains crisp and clearly visible. Decorative incised lines on the shoulders enhance the elegant yet functional design, characteristic of Roman provincial craftsmanship during the Imperial period.
An excellent example of Roman personal jewelry, combining practicality, symbolism, and enduring craftsmanship in a compact and well-balanced form.
