Maeda Chikubosai II - Cesta - Bambú - Tapa de Tejido Molinete

Item Description This exquisite lidded basket (jikiro) is a work by Maeda Chikubosai II (1917–2003), a Japanese bamboo craft artist designated a Living National Treasure in bamboo craft in 1995. He was the third artist to receive this designation in the field of bamboo craft. This work is a fine expression of Chikubosai's style, characterized by its layered structure and intricately woven surfaces. The center of both the lid and the body features a swirling radial pattern, surrounded by concentric bands combining finely woven bamboo strips and wide, flat-braided strips, alternating vertical and diagonal rhythms. The contrast between the densely woven sections and the linear openwork creates a striking visual depth, reflecting the high level of technical mastery rooted in the Osaka sencha basket tradition in which Chikubosai trained. The signature is inscribed directly onto a bamboo strip at the center of the interior of the lid, consistent with Chikubosai's practice of signing his works in this manner. This work is accompanied by its original tomobako (signed) and a paper insert, providing provenance documentation. Dimensions Height: 11.0 cm Width: 24 cm Depth: 24 cm Weight 150 g Condition The work is in overall good condition, with no notable scratches or staining. The bamboo surface displays a rich, even patina acquired over time, and while there is some age-appropriate wear, it does not detract from the structural integrity or visual beauty of the piece.
