Antique Late 19th Century French Surveying Instrument Brass Pantometer / Cross-Staff.

A fine example of the precision and craftsmanship of late 19th-century topography, this antique French surveying instrument. Crafted between 1886 and 1893, this brass pantometer/cross-staff bears the prestigious signature of H. Morin & Gensse (Ateliers H. Morin & Gensse), located at 3 rue Boursault, Paris. Constructed with a solid polished brass body with folding sighting vanes/arms and fine mechanical adjustment components.

H. Morin & Gensse was established around 1880 in Paris by Henri Morin. In 1886, Morin formed a partnership with E. Gensse, leading to the name H. Morin & Gensse the partnership lasted until it was dissolved around 1893. The firm operated out of notable Parisian addresses associated with precision engineering, maintaining its offices and presence at 3 rue Boursault and later 11 rue Dulong. The company quickly became one of France’s leading makers of high-end measuring tools. They manufactured a wide variety of equipment for professionals, including theodolites, levels, compasses, barometers, drafting sets, and topographic/artillery instruments. This Pantometer is beautifully and clearly engraved on the base with the workshop's historic Parisian address. With its warm antique brass patina and industrial aesthetic, it makes a striking statement piece for a desk, bookshelf, or cabinet of curiosities.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, minor patination, and scuffs consistent with a historic field instrument of this age. Complete as a standalone piece (tripod mount not present).
