An Edwardian gentleman’s walking cane by J. Howell & Co Ltd, the malacca shaft mounted with a substantial sterling silver pommel richly embossed with scrolling foliate ornament. The silver mount is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1901, including the lion passant confirming sterling silver, and bears the maker’s mark for J. Howell & Co Ltd. The shaped cartouche to the top is engraved with the initials WW and dated 1902, suggesting the cane was presented or personalised shortly after its manufacture. The warm honey-coloured malacca shaft retains an attractive polished surface and natural variation developed through age and use, terminating in a metal ferrule. In good antique condition, with surface wear, light marks and minor irregularities consistent with age and use. The silver retains crisp decorative detail, with wear to the engraved cartouche, while the shaft shows age-related marks and the ferrule has considerable wear and oxidation.
