Roberto Panichi (1937-2022) - Still Life

An elegant and masterful diptych of postwar Italian still lifes by the renowned Italian master, scholar, and writer Roberto Panichi (Cuneo, 1937 – Impruneta, 2022). Painted between 1967 and 1968, during a period of great creativity and fundamental artistic formation, these two works highlight Panichi's singular artistic vision. A profoundly cultured intellectual, having graduated in Classics from the University of Florence under the influence of the legendary art historian Roberto Longhi, Panichi successfully combined rigorous formal geometry with a vibrant, tactile, and painterly expressionism. The narrative of objects: The first composition (1967) features a suggestive arrangement of apples next to a transparent glass on a pristine white tablecloth. The delicate transparency of the glass contrasts beautifully with the rich, dense pigmentation of the fruit. The second composition (1968) features an elegant glazed earthenware jug reflecting delicate shades of light aqua green, paired with a bright, sun-kissed orange. Both works share a crisp, expressive brushstroke and a keen attention to volumetric composition, reminiscent of the great 20th-century Italian still life tradition (Morandi, Annigoni, and Hans Joachim Staude). International appeal and Dutch connections: Roberto Panichi was an internationally renowned figure, exhibiting his work in over 80 solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the United States (including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami). His artistic research in particular garnered strong acclaim from institutions and collectors in Northern Europe and the Netherlands, making this diptych a fantastic addition for cross-border European contemporary art collectors. These paintings represent a sound and timeless investment. They are housed in their sophisticated contemporary wooden frames, with a natural linen passe-partout, which enhances the organic and historical value of the objects. Technical analysis and attributes: Artist: Roberto Panichi (1937–2022)Subject: Still lifes; Period: 1967–1968 (Mid-century / Post-war Italian art) Medium: Oil on canvas; Signatures: Both signed and dated by hand by the artist ("Panichi 67" and "Panichi 68"); Provenance: Private Italian collection; Condition: Both works and their original period frames are in excellent overall condition.
