Nejla Rouissi — Between Two Depths
Between Two Depths is a unique original artwork created by multidisciplinary artist and doctor-engineer Nejla Rouissi in 2024.
Two whales move through separate yet interconnected depths of navy blue, turquoise, black, silver and gold. One travels through the upper current while the second emerges from below, creating a silent dialogue across the luminous central passage.
Although the whales occupy different spaces, their movements follow the same invisible rhythm. They remain connected by the ocean, by memory and by a shared current that continues beyond the limits of the canvas.
The composition explores distance, connection, balance and the mysterious language of the sea. The central silver passage may be interpreted as a current, a horizon, a source of light or a threshold between two states of existence.
Raised golden lines guide the eye through the painting and illuminate the whales’ trajectories against the darker passages. Small golden fish introduce delicacy and scale, extending the movement through the lower area of the composition.
Artistic Concept
Between two depths, darkness holds the light.
The whales communicate through an ancient resonance that travels across the composition. Gold traces and protects their paths against the endless night, while the sea preserves the memory of every distant call.
The work reflects the invisible relationships that can survive separation. Two beings may inhabit different depths while remaining connected by the same energy, the same movement and the same origin.
Artist’s Handwritten Poem
The reverse of the canvas carries an original handwritten poem by the artist:
“Between two depths, where darkness holds the light.
Two whales send ancient thunder through it all.
Gold seals their path against the endless night.
The sea remembers every distant call.”
This handwritten inscription forms an integral part of the artwork and reinforces its poetic and conceptual identity.
Multilayer 3D Technique
The artwork is constructed through successive layers of acrylic paint and sculptural textured medium.
Nejla Rouissi builds the surface gradually, creating visible depth and relief across the canvas. The raised structures give the painting a physical presence that changes according to the direction and intensity of the surrounding light.
Deep navy and black passages absorb illumination, while turquoise, silver and gold areas reflect it. The viewer therefore experiences different shadows, highlights and textural details according to the viewing angle.
The metallic effects are created using silver and gold acrylic mediums. These luminous accents are not merely decorative: they structure the composition, guide its movement and create a visual connection between the different depths.
The artwork is completed with a protective finish designed to improve resistance to ultraviolet exposure and environmental humidity, supporting the long-term preservation of its colours, reliefs and metallic effects.

About the Artist
Nejla Rouissi, born on December 6, 1988, is a doctor-engineer, researcher, university lecturer in computer science and multidisciplinary contemporary artist.
Her practice develops at the intersection of science, technology, embodied movement and artistic creation. Drawing on her scientific background, she explores systemic complexity and the invisible structures that shape human experience.
Her works translate the tension between logic and emotion into layered compositions in which relief, texture, colour and depth function as living systems. Networks, forces, balance, transformation, memory and connection are central themes within her practice.
Rouissi works across multiple formats and techniques, ranging from intimate paintings to sculptural reliefs. Acrylic colour, metallic accents, accumulated layers and raised surfaces create works whose appearance changes according to light and viewing angle.
Her parallel practice of trapeze and aerial hoop extends her artistic research into physical space. Suspension, gravity, movement, tension and balance become embodied counterparts to the visual structures present within her paintings.
Through this convergence of scientific thought, technical precision, physical experience and abstraction, Nejla Rouissi has developed a distinctive contemporary visual language.
She is represented internationally by Abstract Art Gallery, founded in Riga in 2010.
