- John Everett Millais’ Ophelia (1851–52) is one of the defining masterpieces of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and one of the most celebrated images of Victorian British art. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the painting depicts Ophelia floating in the stream shortly before her death, her pale face and open hands suspended between serenity and tragedy. Millais painted the luxuriant riverbank with extraordinary botanical precision, surrounding the figure with willow, reeds and an abundance of flowers whose symbolic meanings reinforce Shakespeare’s narrative. The jewel-like greens, delicate blossoms and meticulous observation of nature exemplify the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of truth to nature, while the combination of literary subject, emotional intensity and luminous colour connects Millais with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and later figures such as Edward Burne-Jones and John William Waterhouse. The quintessentially English landscape gives the composition the atmosphere of a Victorian garden or secluded countryside, evoking the romantic, storybook England associated with Shakespeare, the Arts and Crafts tradition and the illustrated literary culture of the late nineteenth century.
With its emerald, moss and olive greens, touches of blue, ivory, pink and violet, Ophelia has exceptional decorative presence in Victorian, English country, cottagecore, Arts & Crafts, classical, eclectic and contemporary interiors. Its dense vegetation and almost enchanted woodland atmosphere work beautifully against sage, olive, cream, dusty blue, burgundy or warm neutral walls, particularly with an antique-gold or dark-wood frame. Velvet, walnut, mahogany, brass, floral textiles, botanical motifs and traditional English furniture can reinforce its romantic character, while a cleaner setting allows Millais’ remarkable colours and natural detail to become the focal point. Ideal for a living room, library, bedroom or reading area, it also makes an evocative gift for admirers of Shakespeare, Victorian England, English gardens, botanical art, Pre-Raphaelite painting and classic British literature.
Millais’ Ophelia occupies a distinctive place in collections that bring together Rossetti, Waterhouse, Burne-Jones, William Morris, Arthur Rackham, Klimt, Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Dalí, while its enduring cultural status allows it to sit equally naturally alongside modern and contemporary icons such as Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Hockney, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Kaws and Karl Lagasse. For collectors whose interests extend across art, design and luxury culture, it can complement names such as Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Dior, Hermès and Gucci, as well as contemporary collectibles including Lego, Star Wars and Pokémon. Combining Shakespearean literature, Victorian romance, an idyllic English landscape and extraordinary botanical detail, Ophelia remains an instantly recognizable image of nineteenth-century British art and an enduring vision of poetic, enchanted England.
