A lot of four magnificent 0.85L bottles of COINTREAU Spécialité Angers liqueur—a volume marketed exclusively by Cointreau Spain-. These were produced, distilled, and bottled at the "Destilerías Vilafranca" facility (Barcelona) by "Cointreau y Cía"—the company's Spanish subsidiary—using the original Angers liqueur formula. Purchased from a wholesale wine and spirits supplier between 1981 and 1986, they have been stored in a cellar ever since.
To avoid the Spanish tariffs in effect at the time, this liqueur was produced at "Destilerías Vilafranca"; however, after Cointreau decided in 1998—for commercial reasons—to shift all production to Angers (France), the Vilafranca distillery ceased making it that same year. After 28 years without production, these Catalan-made bottles have become increasingly rare and highly prized. They feature complete original labels, intact metal screw caps, perfect red ribbons and embossed glass Cointreau logos, and very high fill levels; there are no leaks, the liquid is crystal clear with no sediment, and the Spanish tax stamps for alcoholic beverages—appropriate for the volume (0.5 to 1 L) and the era—are included.
The liqueur has been produced since 1875 by distilling—in copper stills—alcohol macerated with a blend of dried sweet and bitter orange peels. Its intense, distinctive flavor is achieved through triple distillation, hence the name "Triple Sec." Unlike Grand Marnier, which uses only bitter oranges, Cointreau employs both sweet and bitter oranges and does not include cognac in the blend. With its bittersweet orange flavor, it is enjoyed neat or in iconic cocktails (Margarita, Cosmopolitan, White Lady, Sidecar, etc.) and used in culinary preparations, flambé dishes, confectionery—pairing sublimely with dark chocolate—pastry making, and more. Its 40-year age gives it several qualities that set it apart from current bottlings: a smoother alcoholic sensation, notes of candied orange, and a rich, silky texture that is round, mature, and velvety—a complex liqueur to be savored neat or over a little ice.
Interesting for collecting—given that they have not been produced in Spain since 1998—and/or for drinking.
