World, 1916-1972 – Collection of 37 Notes / coupons from WWI, WWII and Military Issues
This lot consists exclusively of banknotes issued during the First and Second World Wars, as well as other military-related issues. The collection includes notes from both Europe and Asia, with a strong emphasis on British Armed Forces Special Vouchers, including several better and scarcer pieces. Also present is a diverse range of Japanese Invasion Money issued for use in occupied territories during WWII. Notably, the lot includes several Filipino guerrilla notes, emergency currencies issued by local resistance forces during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. In addition, the lot contains circulation notes from the Netherlands and its overseas territories during wartime periods. An interesting and varied selection reflecting the turbulent monetary history of the 20th century.
British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSV)
British Armed Forces Special Vouchers were issued during and after World War II as a form of military currency, primarily for use by British troops stationed abroad. These vouchers were introduced to prevent local economies from being disrupted by foreign military spending and to reduce the risk of currency black market activities. The notes were only valid within designated military establishments such as canteens and post exchanges, and had no legal tender status outside these areas. Several series were issued from the 1940s to the 1970s, featuring distinct colors, denominations, and security features.
Japanese Invasion Money (JIM)
Japanese Invasion Money, often referred to as JIM, was issued by the Japanese government during World War II for use in occupied territories throughout Asia, including the Philippines, Malaya, Burma, and the Dutch East Indies. These notes were part of Japan’s attempt to control local economies and assert dominance over conquered regions. Printed in large quantities and lacking sufficient backing, JIM quickly lost value and became widely mistrusted by local populations. The designs typically featured local motifs, but carried inscriptions indicating Japanese authority.
