Signé ; Willem Sandberg - Original graphic print with hand-written note in French and Sandberg’s signature - 1975

Willem Sandberg – Limited Edition Reissue with Autograph (1973/1976) This framed artwork is a rare and highly collectible piece by Willem Sandberg (1897–1984), Dutch graphic designer, typographer, and director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1945–1963). Work: Characteristic design by Willem Sandberg, based on an original 1973 composition (held in the Stedelijk Museum collection). Medium: Original graphic print with hand-written note in French and Sandberg’s authentic signature, dated 1976. Accompanied by: A period photographic portrait of Sandberg, also signed and dated 9.12.1975. Sandberg was not only one of the most influential Dutch designers of the 20th century, but also a resistance fighter during WWII, playing a key role in the famous 1943 attack on the Amsterdam population register. After the war, he modernized the Stedelijk into an international center of avant-garde art, embracing movements such as COBRA and expanding into photography, design, and industrial art. This piece comes from the collection of Petrescu Vrancea, a Romanian Agerpres publicist and passionate autograph collector. Vrancea was well known for his contacts in the international cultural scene, and for building a collection of signed works and correspondence from prominent European intellectuals, artists and politicians. The combination of Sandberg’s limited edition print, signed photograph, and personal dedication, along with its provenance from Petrescu Vrancea’s collection, makes this work a museum-worthy collector’s item.
