"The Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for 2008 has been awarded to Graciela Iturbide from Mexico City. Graciela Iturbide is considered one of the most important and influential Latin American photographers of the past four decades. Iturbide has developed a photographic style based on her strong interest in culture, ritual and everyday life in her native Mexico and other countries. Iturbide has extended the concept of documentary photography, to explore the relationships between man and nature, the individual and the cultural, the real and the psychological. She continues to inspire a younger generation of photographers in Latin America and beyond. The award ceremony will take place 25 October, 2008 at the Hasselblad Foundation, Göteborg." (from the publisher) Steidl, Göttingen and The Hasselblad Center, 2008. First edition, first printing. Clothbound hardcover. 250 x 270 cm. 144 pages. Tritone and color plates throughout. Photos: Graciela Iturbide. Book design by Hans Cogne/Steidl Design. Text in English. Condition: Book inside new, mint, unread; only opened once for signature. This is a lot by 5Uhr30.com. We guarantee detailed and accurate descriptions, 100% transport protection, 100% transport insurance and of course combined shipping - worldwide. Graciela Iturbide was born in Mexico City in 1942. She began to study film-making in the late 1960s at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematograficos. While assisting Manuel Alvarez Bravo in the early 1970s, she studied photography, and soon devoted herself to the art. Traveling to Europe around this time, she met Henri Cartier-Bresson, who became a significant influence on her work. This subtle yet powerful book of photographs blends evocative scenes from the many subcultures of Iturbide's native Mexico with the artist's own deeply personal, and oftentimes Surrealistic, vision. Iturbide's work mixes history, lyricism and portraiture. She deals heartily with the issues of sameness and difference. Sun-cracked earth contrasts with playing children, stark walls with elaborate alters, everyday life with special celebration. These oppositions represent deeper conflicts in the nature of land and body. Although the work is black-and-white, beautifully printed in duotone, the bright red of sacrificial blood, the colorful skirts, and murals seem to appear in full color.
