This is the rare second edition, printed in Jesnitz (Jesienice), 1721, by Israel ben Abraham. Divided into multiple thematic parts, this encyclopedic work covers both celestial and earthly subjects: • “The Upper World” – Astronomy, celestial spheres, planetary systems • “The Microcosm” (Little World) – Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and surgical medicine • “The World of Thought” – Philosophy, theology, and religious polemics • Plus: Charts, poetic introductions, anatomical and astronomical illustrations, including cosmological diagrams such as the Ptolemaic and Copernican models. Tobias Cohn studied medicine at the University of Padua, a leading center of medical science in Europe. In this treatise, he not only presents scientific and medical knowledge but also responds to anti-Jewish polemics he encountered among non-Jews during his studies. He aims to show that the Jewish people, even in exile, have made significant contributions to science and wisdom. This edition includes a fascinating account of the false messiah Sabbatai Zevi and the interrogation of Nathan of Gaza by the rabbis of Venice — a unique historical and polemical component absent in most scientific texts.
