【Product details】
A seated wooden statue of Kwan Yin (Guanyin), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, enclosed within its original lacquered Buddhist altar cabinet.
The figure is hand-carved from wood and features inlaid crystal eyes that lend a serene and lifelike expression. The face and hands are finished with gofun, a traditional Japanese white pigment made by grinding oyster shells into an ultra-fine powder, valued for its smooth texture and luminous appearance. It has long been used in Buddhist sculpture and traditional doll-making for its refined, human-like effect.
The Bodhisattva wears a green upper robe with peony arabesque motifs and a red lower robe adorned with phoenix designs. In East Asian iconography, peonies represent nobility, prosperity, and feminine grace, while phoenixes symbolise virtue, harmony, and rebirth—qualities deeply associated with Guanyin. She holds a vase containing a lotus flower, a classic symbol of purity and spiritual awakening.
The golden designs seen on the robes and cabinet are created using a mixture of lacquer and gold powder, a technique that produces a soft, radiant effect distinct from metallic gilding.
Visible signs of age include surface wear, dust, discolouration, and small abrasions. Fine lacquer cracks are present on the figure’s surface, including a few on the face. There is a small crack near the left knee, one missing finger on the right hand, and a repaired area on the back of the robe. The upper portion of the halo is missing, and the halo itself has a visible crack. The cabinet shows lacquer losses around the base and two noticeable lacquer cracks on the roof. The right door is slightly stiff when opening. Please refer to the photos for condition details.
