The Sketchbook of Geoffry Crayon, Gent. 2 volumes complete – Washington Irving / Arthur Rackham among others (illustrations) New York, London: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, The Knickerbocker Press, 1895. Vol I: xix, 294 pages, Vol II: vi, 315 pages. 22cm x 15cm. Newer dark blue quarter leather binding with cream-white linen boards, gilt lettered spine and gilt top edge. Limited edition of 100 copies, with proofs of the plates printed on Japanese paper and signed by the publisher, this being No. 42. Includes four black and white plates by Arthur Rackham, plus 28 other black and white plates, some from photographs. All plates come with captioned tissue guards. Decorative red and green leaf and floral design borders on every page throughout the text. A revised collection of 34 essays and short stories including two of Irving's best-known stories, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". Geoffrey Crayon was Irving's pseudonym. Very little wear to the boards and spine. Slight browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, the illustrations are vibrant and in great condition, and the binding is tight. Overall, a handsome set in very good condition.
