Born in London in 1938, David Bailey established himself in fashion photography in the 1960s as a contributor to Vogue, becoming one of the most popular exponents of the art photography world; the creation of ingenious and often provocative portraits has always been a central interest in his work. Published on the occasion of the major Milanese exhibition (co-produced by the Municipality of Milan, PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea and Tod’s) from the National Portrait Gallery in London, the monograph is divided into themes, with iconic images alongside lesser-known and unpublished portraits, and is introduced by an essay by art historian Tim Marlow. David Bailey, an honorary member of the Royal Photographic Society, is considered one of the greatest living photographers. In 2001 he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his artistic commitment. He recently published Bailey’s East End (2015). Tim Marlow, an English art historian, author of numerous books and presenter of radio and television programmes, is the exhibitions director of the London contemporary art gallery White Cube.
