Silver Corkscrew
Anonymous, probably Dutch, 18th century
An elegant silver corkscrew richly decorated with chased ornament and cherubic faces in relief. The handle, cast in the Louis Quatorze style with symmetrical scrolls, can be unscrewed from the lower section. The steel worm is attached to the handle and fits neatly inside the hollow sheath when not in use. A finely engraved monogram on the base suggests personal ownership or a presentation purpose. The piece bears an indistinct 18th-century silver mark, probably of Dutch origin.
The design, with its lively ornament and cherub motifs, recalls the work of the Amsterdam silversmith Hendrik Smook, active around the mid-eighteenth century.
Combining refined craftsmanship with practical ingenuity, this corkscrew reflects the luxurious table culture of the Baroque period, when even everyday utensils were conceived as decorative works of art.
