Vladimir Mayakovsky - Exile edition - Selected Mayakovsky - 1923

A rare exile edition of Mayakovsky’s texts, including the significant “revolutionary epic” 150,000,000, was published in Berlin in 1923. The text is in Russian (Cyrillic), with a black-and-white photograph of the author on the frontispiece. Publisher: Nakanune. Condition: Slightly worn edges of the cover, with a few small spots in places, otherwise in very good condition. Mayakovsky’s texts had to be published abroad in exile primarily due to the political and cultural climate in Soviet Russia during the 1920s. Although he was a prominent supporter of the Bolshevik Revolution, the Soviet regime exercised strict control over artistic expression and publishing. Censorship was widespread, and works that did not fully align with the official ideology or that challenged bureaucratic orthodoxy often faced suppression or alteration. Additionally, the avant-garde and experimental style of Mayakovsky’s poetry, along with his sometimes critical or satirical tone, did not always fit comfortably within the emerging Socialist Realism framework that later dominated Soviet literature. Many émigré publishers and intellectuals sought to preserve and promote authentic, uncensored Russian literary voices outside Soviet control. Publishing in exile, particularly in cultural hubs like Berlin, allowed Mayakovsky and other Russian authors to reach audiences without censorship, maintain artistic freedom, and keep alive the diversity of Russian literary culture during a period of political repression at home.
