[19], 423, [17] pages. 17.5cm x 12cm. Full vellum binding with hand lettered spine, and red edges. First edition of this first biography of Philip Melanchton (1497-1560), an intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation, and influential designer of educational systems. Comes with an engraved title vignette. Some wear and spotting to the boards and spine. The front hinge has been reinforced with tape, and it is quite soft. Pencil markings on the front pastedown endpaper. Pen inscriptions and markings on the title page. There is also some whiteout applied to the space next to the title vignette, and there is a small hole in the bottom right of the title page (see photos). Pen underlining of text and occasional notes in the margins throughout until page 181. Handwritten page numbers on page 424 and 425. Notes written in the back endpapers. The back pastedown endpaper has a small tear in the right bottom. Some browning, spotting, and occasional water staining in the margins throughout. The text is clear, and the binding is solid overall. Overall, a copy in good condition.
