Grecia - Isla de Chios (Scio) Mar Egeo del Norte; Cornelis de Bruyn - Scio - 1681-1700

Very impressive and very large MARITIME PANORAMA of the Island of Chios (Northern Coast of the Aegean Sea) as seen from the town of Chios towards East over the Strait of Chios towards Cesme Peninsula (mainland of Turkey). Drawn from nature by the famous Dutch traveler and topographer Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726), this is an accurate detailed depiction of the late 17th century. The etching features the Eastern coast of Chios town. Indicated by letter "A" is the old castle, also known locally as "Kastro". This originally medieval castle was fortified and expanded by the Genoese who ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century. The etching (copper plate) is connected originally from two plates and folded as issued. Folds rather flattened, except for the center fold. Net Size of the etching: 98cm x 27,5 cm - Size with margins: 130.5 x 39 cm Rare first edition. Dated: Delft, 1698. Published in " Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn...". Large paper edition with exceptional large margins (very few minor chips at bottom margins). Excellent edition with sharp imprint of the etching and even colour. Strong and fresh paper quality. Blank verso. RARELY FOUND IN THIS STUNNING STATE! One of the most impressive, desired and rare large panoramic views by de Bruyn.
