- Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) was an American painter and a central figure of Abstract Expressionism. He revolutionized modern art with his radical drip technique, developed between 1947 and 1950, in which he poured, splattered, and layered fluid paint over large canvases placed on the floor. This physical, almost choreographic method allowed him to work from all angles, creating dense webs of energy, rhythm, and movement that broke decisively from traditional brushwork. His paintings became visual records of motion gestural, spontaneous, yet meticulously balanced.
Pollock’s innovations marked a turning point in post-war American art, positioning New York as the new global cultural capital. Though his career was brief, his influence remains enormous, and his works are among the most sought-after in the contemporary art market. Today, paintings from his drip period command exceptional prices: masterpieces such as No. 5 (1948) and Number 19 (1948) have achieved well over $50–60 million at private sales and auctions, with rare large-scale drip canvases reaching even higher valuations.
Number II, created in 1948 one of the most important years of Pollock’s mature “drip” style presents a dense, interlaced network of black splashes, looping lines, and rhythmic strokes spread across a light background. The composition, as seen in your image, is dominated by energetic black cascading in layered trajectories. The surface vibrates with dynamic movement, yet retains a striking sense of structure: thick arcs anchor the eye, while thinner splatters create an atmospheric depth. This work embodies the full strength of Pollock’s method: controlled chaos, gestural precision, and the immersive spatial complexity characteristic of his finest period.
Pieces from 1948 are particularly prized by collectors because they represent the crystallization of Pollock’s signature technique.
