About the Catalogue
This edition was produced for the 22nd Dimitria Festival—a major cultural institution of Thessaloniki. The exhibition featured works spanning Ghika’s entire artistic career, including pieces he had gifted to the National Gallery.
The catalogue itself is scarce, and signed copies with original drawings are especially uncommon.
About Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas
Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas—widely known as Ghika—is one of the most important figures of modern Greek art. A painter, sculptor, engraver, writer and academic, he was a pioneering force in Greek cubism and a founding member of AICA-Hellas.
Influenced by the European avant-garde during his years in Paris, Ghika developed a distinctive visual language that reduced the Greek landscape, architecture, and intense Mediterranean light into geometric forms and interlocking planes.
His works are housed in major international institutions including:
National Gallery of Greece
Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris
Tate Gallery, London
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Ghika is celebrated today as one of Greece’s greatest modernists. His home is now a museum operated by the Benaki Museum, and in 2018 the British Museum honored him in a landmark exhibition about his friendship with John Craxton and Patrick Leigh Fermor.
