2016 Massolino Barolo - Serralunga d'Alba DOCG - 6 Pullo (0.75L)
Massolino (formally Azienda Agricola Vigna Rionda) is a Piedmont winery best known for its Barolo DOCG wines made from the Nebbiolo variety. The 23 hectares (57 acres) of estate vines are almost all entirely in the Barolo sub-region Serralunga d'Alba.
Nebbiolo is, unsurprisingly, the most important grape variety. Five Barolo wines are made, as well as a Langhe Nebbiolo.
However the portfolio is extensive by Piedmontese standards; other red wines are Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba,. Three white wines are made; a Chardonnay and Riesling under the Langhe DOC, and a Moscato d'Asti.
The Baroli
The core bottling is the Massolino Barolo, a blend of Nebbiolo from multiple vineyards covering 7ha (17 acres) of land. The wine has been made since 1911. It is aged in large oak casks for 30 months.
A trio of wines are made from cru Barolo vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba:
Margheria: parcels totalling 1.1ha (2.7 acres) on calcareous and sandy soils; 30 months maturation in large oak barrels
Parafada: parcels totalling 1.13ha on marl, limestone and sand; 30 months in oak barrels
Vigna Rionda Riserva: parcels totalling 2.3ha (5.7 acres) on marly lime; 42 months in large slavonian oak casks plus 30 months in bottle
Parussi is a fourth single vineyard wine from blocks on chalk, clay and sand totalling 1.3ha (2.5 acres) outside of Serralunga in the neighboring commune of Castiglione Falletto. It spends 30 months in oak barrels.
History
The winery was founded in 1896 by Giovanno Massolino and remains family-owned and -operated. His son and daughter built the first cellar in the 1930s and were involved in foundation of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbarest Alba Langhe e Dogliano. This organization promotes the regional viticultural areas and was especially important before national ratification of the formal appellations.
The wines were first made in a cellar below the family house in the centre of Serralunga d'Alba. In the 1930s the winery moved to the other side of the road, and has since been expanded underground, as the family did not want to leave the historic centre.
