The seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha 釈迦牟尼仏 - Statue Bois - Japon - Période Meiji (1868–1912)

This seated Great Buddha statue was created around 150 years ago, during the Meiji period. Its serene expression is striking. The entire statue is meticulously finished, from the head, face, robe, and pedestal. It is a relatively large Buddha statue, but I feel it is highly refined. The spot (similar to a mole) on the Great Buddha's forehead is called a "byakugo 白毫." I believe the byakugo has been replaced with a new one. By the way, the Great Buddha's head is called a "rahotsu 螺髪." Byakugo 白毫 Meaning: A curl of long white hair in the center of the forehead. Function: The light emitted from this symbolizes the "power of the Buddha" to illuminate the world and find those who are suffering. Rahotsu 螺髪 Meaning: A strand of hair twisted like a conch shell on the head of a Buddha statue. Role: It represents the profound wisdom of the enlightened Buddha and his transcendence as a being beyond human. Shakyamuni Buddha and Shaka Nyorai are both words referring to Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, and there is no essential difference between them. The statue of Shakanyorai Buddha represents Shakanyorai Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Shakyamuni Buddha is typically portrayed with a serene and meditative expression, symbolizing the moment when he attained enlightenment. Shakanyorai Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is believed to have been born around 2,500 years ago in the vicinity of present-day Nepal and India. After undergoing ascetic practices and attaining enlightenment, he went on to establish Buddhism. The seated statue captures pivotal moments in his life and the posture in which he attained enlightenment. Devotees express their reverence for the teachings of the Buddha through such statues, using them as objects for meditation and prayer.
