Artist Profile Ando Hidetake (b. 1938) is a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist from Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, the heartland of Mino ware production. After graduating from Tajimi Technical High School, he worked in his family's kiln before encountering the legendary master Kato Tokuro, who advised him to dedicate himself to Mino's indigenous ceramic traditions: Shino, Ki-Seto, and Oribe wares from the Momoyama period. Throughout his illustrious career, Ando has received numerous accolades including the Koheisho Award (1990), Mino Ceramic Shoroku Prize Grand Prize (1998), and the Gifu Newspaper Grand Prize Cultural Award (2002). In 1998, he was designated as a holder of Tajimi City's Intangible Cultural Property, and in 2003, he received the prestigious designation as holder of Gifu Prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property for Kiseto technique.
