A lovely lacquered jikirô 食籠 (ceremonial food container) with a domed fitted lid, raised on a pedestal foot. The lid is decorated with a refined golden lacquer design of chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) drifting on a flowing stream, set against a deep black lacquer ground. The interior is finished in a vibrant vermilion red lacquer. Lacquered food containers of this type were traditionally presented by affluent families at weddings or other important ceremonial occasions, filled with seasonal delicacies. Period: Japan – Meiji period, around 1900. Dimensions: Height 19.5 cm, Diameter 29 cm In good restored condition, with traces of wear consistent with age.
