Sandeman - 50 years old Tawny - Porto - 1 Bouteille (0,75 l)

PLEASE NOTE: This is a recurring auction. The seal number(s) you see on the photos might differ from the one(s) on your bottle(s). Sandeman 50 Years Old Tawny Port 1 x 0.75L 1 Bottle Port Wine DESCRIPTION It all started in 1790 when the 25-year-old son of a Scottish prosperous cabinetmaker asked for a 300£ loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London. This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses. From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today. In 1877, just one year following the creation of the first ‘Trade Marks Registration Act’ in England, the brand name ‘GSC George Sandeman & Co.’ (in Sandeman casks since 1805) was officially listed, being one the world’s oldest registered trademarks still in use. Sandeman is since 2002 under the ownership of Sogrape, a leading family-owned fine wine company, founded in 1942 in Portugal, and operating in five continents. Sandeman has profited from its know-how, investments and footprint, namely in the Douro, where Sogrape is a prime land owner and leading player in the industry. The many prizes and awards received by Sandeman Vintage Ports are a reflection of the excellent work done in the recent years. Sandeman was in the founding family from 1790 until 1952, when it became a public company, before Seagram took possession in 1980. In 2000, when Seagram beverage business was sold, Sandeman briefly passed to Pernod Ricard prior to its acquisition by Sogrape in 2002. WINEMAKER: Luis Sottomayor. AWARDS/RECOMMENDATIONS 97 Points, The Port Forum 96 Points, Editor’s Choice, Wine Enthusiast 96 Points, Wine Spectator 95 Points, Gold Medal, Decanter World Wine Awards 95 Points, Gold Medal, International Wine Challenge 95 Points, Gold Medal, International Wine & Spirit Competition 19.5 Points, Best Wines Of The Year 2022, Vinho Grandes Escolhas 19 Points, Jancis Robinson 19 Points, Matthew Juke’s Articles WINE VARIETIES: Traditional Douro grape varieties. VINIFICATION Fermented grapes are pressed underfoot in granite lagares in the traditional manner for Port wine. The wine's balance and harmony, as well as its structure, are obtained by carefully selecting the grapes and choosing the correct moment to add wine spirit and halt fermentation. This wine is aged in traditional oak casks of approximately 640 litres in the Sandeman cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. In these ideal conditions, in terms of temperature and humidity, the Port wines naturally evolve their distinctive bouquet over decades. The final blend is made from wines that demonstrate exceptional ageing potential. TASTING NOTES A golden colour with greenish tints. An aroma of good aromatic intensity and excellent complexity with balsamic notes of cedar and tobacco box, hints of wax and ginger, and spices such as pepper. It has further notes of caramelised fruit and jammy apricots. On the palate, it has good volume and a vibrant acidity with prominent notes of spices and crystallised fruit that invite an extraordinarily long and elegant finish. SERVING Sandeman Porto Tawny 50 Years Old is very complex and can be appreciated on its own or paired with desserts that have dried fruit or a caramel base. Decanting is not necessary. Serve at between 12ºC-14ºC.
