Jizo Bosatsu is a beloved and compassionate figure in Japanese Buddhism, known as the protector of children, expectant mothers, travellers, and those suffering in the afterlife. The exterior of the cabinet is finished in black lacquer, while the interior is painted with lacquer mixed with gold powder, creating a luminous surface that has partially faded with age. The figure and the lotus pedestal are carved with precision and warmth, conveying both serenity and strength. The pedestal is fixed to the cabinet base, while the figure and halo are removable. A small hole is visible on Jizo’s forehead, likely where a jewel once adorned the figure. Three small holes can be seen on the back—one at the base aligns with a projection on the halo’s support column, while the other two correspond to where nails were once fixed. The halo and figure are now detached but fit naturally into position. The robe of Jizo is decorated with beautiful maki-e (a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs), adding refined detail to the sacred image. Signs of age are visible throughout, including wear, losses, and discolouration to the lacquer, surface grime, dents, small holes, and scratches on the cabinet. The metal fittings show patina and rust from age. The sculpture also exhibits wear, small cracks, and flaking to the lacquer surface. The cabinet opens and closes properly. Please refer to the photos for details of the condition. Dimensions of Zushi: approx.
