Suma Genji (須磨源氏) - Tsukioka Kōgyo (月岡耕漁) - Japon (Sans prix de réserve)
Item Description:
This elegant Japanese woodblock print is from the esteemed Nōga Taikan (能畫大鑑) series, depicting the Noh play Suma Genji (須磨源氏).
Created by the celebrated artist Tsukioka Kōgyo (月岡耕漁), the print captures a noble figure—representing the spirit of Hikaru Genji—in a refined pose, adorned in intricately patterned robes and holding a ceremonial fan.
The delicate backdrop, with stylized pine trees and subtle architectural forms, evokes a timeless sense of serenity.
This work exemplifies Kōgyo’s masterful ability to convey the grace and emotional nuance of Noh theatre through woodblock print.
Synopsis of the Noh Play "Suma Genji":
The play follows Fujiwara no Okinori, a Shinto priest from Miyazaki Shrine, who stops at Suma Bay while on his pilgrimage to the Ise Grand Shrine.
There, he meets an old man who tells him the tale of Hikaru Genji from The Tale of Genji—his rise to power, exile to Suma due to an affair, and eventual return to high status.
The old man hints at being Genji’s spirit himself and disappears, promising to show a divine sign that night.
As moonlight fills the bay, the ghost of Hikaru Genji appears in full courtly form, playing music and performing a graceful dance.
He praises Suma’s beauty and reveals his descent from the heavens to help the people. At dawn, he vanishes into the spring mist.
