The organizing committee of the Moscow Olympics chose this animal as a symbol because it has qualities characteristic of an athlete such as strength, perseverance and courage.
The Summer Olympic Games took place in Moscow, the capital of the USSR, from July 19 to August 3, 1980.
The closing ceremony of the Games of the XXII Olympiad took place on August 3. At the very end of the ceremony, a huge “Misha” floated out into the middle of the stadium, holding onto colorful balloons. He waved his paw goodbye and began to slowly rise above the stadium until he disappeared into the sky.
