Traditional Igbo Mask – Agbogho Mmwo (Southeastern Nigeria)
Traditional ritual mask from the Igbo people, originating in southeastern Nigeria, belonging to the Agbogho Mmwo type, commonly referred to as “Maiden Spirit” or “Girl Mask.”
Agbogho Mmwo masks embody the Igbo ideal of female beauty and are performed during Mmwo masquerades, which celebrate community values, fertility, moral harmony, and the spiritual world. Although representing a young woman, these masks are traditionally worn by initiated men.
This example features refined and stylized facial characteristics, including an oval face, elongated eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth. The surface is typically finished with white kaolin-based pigments, symbolizing purity, peace, and spiritual presence. The overall patina and surface wear are consistent with age and ceremonial use, enhancing the authenticity and character of the piece.
Hand-carved from wood and finished with natural pigments, this mask is a fine example of traditional African tribal art, appreciated for its elegance, symbolic depth, and cultural significance.
