After his death, he was deified as Tenjin and is widely revered in Japan as the Shinto deity of learning, scholarship, and poetry. Figures of Tenjin were traditionally kept in homes, shrines, and temples as symbols of wisdom and academic success, making this subject particularly meaningful and culturally significant. The sculpture was hand-carved in Showa 49 (1974) by Miyazaki Tatsuji (1916–1985), a leading figure in Toyama’s Inami carving tradition. He received a Nitten Special Prize and was also a Nitten member. Inami carving is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, expressive realism, and depth of carving, qualities that are clearly reflected in the refined modelling of this work. A handwritten inscription on the underside of the sculpture reads: “Showa 48, November, a lucky day. Toyama Prefecture, Inami. Made by Miyazaki Tatsuji.” The original wooden storage box is also inscribed with the title, production date, and the artist’s signature. There is wear consistent with age, including scratches on the hat area, scratches on the base, and scratches on both sleeves. The sword at the back is removable. Stains are present on the wooden box.
