Byôbu écran pliant - Soie, feuille d'or, bois laqué, papier, Soie, Papier - Japon - Début de la période Meiji (deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle)

A remarkable low six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a lively Kanô School-style painting on a gold-leaf ground, depicting karako 唐子 (Chinese children) at play before a traditional Chinese pavilion beneath the canopy of an apricot tree 梅 (ume) in full white bloom, near a winding river. The theme of “One Hundred Boys at Play” is a celebrated Chinese motif symbolising longevity, prosperity, and the flourishing of future generations. In this spirited scene, a group of children gather just outside the pavilion, enthusiastically practising their ink painting. One sits in concentration, brush in hand, as others curiously observe his work. Nearby, a boy studies a handscroll, perhaps reviewing a lesson or admiring his own efforts. In the foreground, rocks rise from the riverbank, framed by patches of reeds along the calm inlet. The scene is enveloped by dense clouds of gold leaf. Executed with fine mineral pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The composition is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender navy-blue inner band and a wider greyish-green outer border, and encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with decorative metal hardware. Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century) Dimensions: Total width: 259 cm (2 × 44.5 cm, 4 × 42.5 cm); Height: 106.5 cm In a very good restored condition with minor traces of age and wear on both sides, including some repapered areas to the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. This folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single work of art. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
