Statue de taille réelle d'un gardien de temple bouddhiste. - Bois - Japon - Période Meiji (1868–1912)

A superb, life-size wooden statue of a Buddhist guardian deity, carved in dynamic warrior form and standing on a rocky base. The figure is shown clad in armour, with an expressive stance and finely modelled details. The eyes are inlaid with glass pupils, lending the face a powerful and vivid presence. On the cuirass appears a sculpted monster mask, a symbolic protective element intended to ward off hostile forces opposed to Buddhism. The deity wears an elephant head on his helmet, a defining attribute of this specific guardian. This figure represents Gobujô 五部浄, one of the Eight Legions 八部衆 (hachibushû). These deities were originally assimilated from Indian Brahmanism and Hinduism into Buddhism and serve as protective figures. The Eight Legions act as guardians of Shaka Nyorai 釈迦如来, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, and in temple settings their statues are traditionally arranged around a central image of Shaka. Armoured guardian figures such as this also belong to the broader group of gohôshin 護法神, deities tasked with defending the Buddhist teachings and their followers. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912) Dimensions: Height 172 cm; Width 62 cm; Depth 42 cm In good condition consistent with age, with visible signs of age and use. An age test is shown in the final photograph. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
