Marvelous porcelain figurine of “Enrico Caruso” creation of the famous artist Hans Achtziger for Hutschenreuther Selb Art Department, in excellent condition. It depicts the famous Enrico Caruso as Canio, in Ruggiero Leoncavallo's opera “Pagliacci”. He is standing and leaning with his left arm on a large drum, his right hand held high, supposingly holding a detachable drumstick. He wears a white clown's coat and trousers, a white ruff at his neck and a conical hat, typical harlequin costume, colored painted face. The large drum has a beautiful design in shapes of diamonds colored in vivid turquoise, red, yellow and green. The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, born Errico Caruso in 1873 in Naples, received little education but studied music briefly with Vincenzo Lombardini and made his operatic debut on March 15, 1895 at the Teatro Nuovo, a back street theatre in Naples. After two years singing on the South Italian circuit he auditioned for Giacomo Puccini in the summer of 1897 when Puccini was looking for a leading tenor for a performance of La Boheme in Livorno, and who, on hearing him reportedly exclaimed: “Who has sent you to me? God?” Hans Achtziger (1918 - 2003), was a member of the German “Werkbund” and one of the most influential porcelain modelers in the 20th century. He was the director of the Arts Department at Hutschenreuther AG from 1961 - 1963. It is in excellent condition, Limited edition to 5000 pcs, marked on the back of the base, and signed with the artist name Hans Achtziger, beautifully sculpted and glazed, mallet missing, NO chips, NO cracks and NO repairs, please see the pictures, as they are part of description.
