John Rider, Belfast - Excellent verge fusee - 1226 - Avant 1850
Rare Silver Verge Fusee Pocket Watch – John Rider, Belfast – ca. Late 18th Century
A fine and authentic verge fusee pocket watch, signed John Rider, Belfast, dating to the late 18th century (circa 1780–1800).
The watch is housed in a solid silver pair case, with clear interior hallmarks visible (see photos), consistent with period Irish/British silver. The outer and inner cases show honest age-related wear and light surface scratches, fully in keeping with a genuine antique timepiece of over 200 years.
The white enamel dial is in very good condition for its age, with elegant Arabic numerals, original minute track, and decorative star markers. The dial shows only minor signs of age, with no major losses or restorations visible. It is fitted with period-correct steel hands, matching the style of the era.
Inside, the watch features a fully gilt verge fusee movement, beautifully engraved and signed “Jno Rider, Belfast”, with serial number 1226. The movement displays a finely pierced and engraved balance cock, floral and foliate decoration, and a traditional verge escapement with fusee and chain, a hallmark of high-quality 18th-century watchmaking.
The movement appears complete and original. The balance is present and intact. As with all antique verge watches, accuracy should not be compared to modern standards. The watch has not been tested for long-term running and is sold as found, without service history.
The watch is supplied with a period-style winding key (included).
