L'Inde ancienne Grès Relief - 13 cm (Sans prix de réserve)

Early Medieval Sandstone Head – Bodhisattva or Deity – India / Southeast Asia – ca. 7th–10th century Object Fragmentary sculpted stone head, likely depicting a Bodhisattva or Hindu-Buddhist deity, originally part of a larger temple sculpture or architectural relief. Early Medieval Sandstone Head – Bodhisattva or Deity – India / Southeast Asia – ca. 7th–10th century Fragmentary sculpted stone head, likely depicting a Bodhisattva or Hindu-Buddhist deity, originally part of a larger temple sculpture or architectural relief. This finely carved sandstone head originates from South or Southeast Asia and dates stylistically to the early medieval period (circa 7th–10th century CE). The serene facial expression, softly modeled features, and half-closed eyes reflect a contemplative, devotional aesthetic characteristic of early Buddhist or Hindu sculpture. The figure wears a stylized headdress or diadem, suggesting a Bodhisattva or crowned deity, rather than a historical portrait. The calm, inward-looking expression was intended to convey spiritual presence, enlightenment, and compassion. The rear and sides show ancient breaks, indicating the head was once attached to a larger sculpture or architectural setting, likely within a temple or shrine. Surface wear and weathering are consistent with considerable age and long-term exposure. Provenance: Old German private collection, Allenstein / Pomerania, formed prior to 1939. In my possession since 1980. No export permit is required for shipping within the European Union. The seller guarantees that the object — an old find — was acquired legally and that all relevant permits and documentation are in place. The seller will inform the buyer should the transfer of these permits and/or shipment require more than a few days.
