Carved wooden carousel horse fragment, mid-20th century. This object is an authentic fragment of a hand-carved wooden carousel horse, originating from the world of historic fairs and merry-go-rounds of the mid-20the. Most likely of European origin, it represents traditional fairground craftsmanship still practiced well into this period. The sculpture is carved from solid wood (probably linden or poplar) and retains remnants of its original polychrome paint. The surface shows attractive age-related wear, layered paint and a naturally developed patina, reflecting decades of use and exposure. An old repair to the right front leg is visible. This repair is not recent and has aged naturally together with the object. No modern repainting or over-restoration is apparent. Losses, cracks, paint wear and surface imperfections are consistent with age and use and should be regarded as authentic characteristics rather than defects. The piece was constructed using traditional carousel techniques and may include hollowed sections to reduce weight.
