Georges de Geetere (1859-1929) - Jesus portrait
Georges De Geetere (1859-1929) was a Belgian artist. He was an engraver, painter and illustrator. De Geetere studied under the famous academic artist Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
De Geetere's work was influenced by the Symbolist movement, which emphasized the mystical and ideal aspects of life and art rather than objective reality. His work is eerie, dreamlike, and embraces themes of love, death and inner emotions.
De Geetere was part of the vibrant artistic community of Paris in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, "a period rich in artistic experimentation and innovation". He exhibited his works in various salons and galleries throughout his career.
We offer for sale this extremely beautiful museum piece by the aforementioned painter.
This painting most likely depicts the iconographic theme of Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) or Man of Sorrows, which depicts the suffering Christ during his mockery before his crucifixion, wearing a crown of thorns and often a reed in his hand, as seen in the painting.
Theme: The painting depicts Jesus Christ wearing the crown of thorns after Pilate presents him to the crowd, based on biblical events.
Style: The style of the painting is reminiscent of the work of the Old Masters, such as the South German School, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, or Alexander Teschner, who created similar depictions.
This is a very deeply moving piece.
If you look a little further, it touches people.
The size of the work without a frame is 65 x 53 cm. Of course, it is an oil painting on canvas.
It is in absolutely impeccable condition, it comes from a noble family heirloom in Belgium, where it was regularly maintained. Its origin can be traced, it came to us at auction.
The work of art is still in its original antique frame, in an oak frame, with minor defects. There were only defects on the lower frame, but we repaired them, so it is still visible, but not disturbing.
We can post it carefully packaged, in an insured, registered package.
