Herman Frederik Carel (Herman) ten Kate (The Hague 1822 - The Hague 1891) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. Here we have a Superb work by Herman ten Kate. This watercolour has so much quality and typical detail of all his artwork. Signed bottom right comes mounted, glazed and framed ready to hang. Biography : Ten Kate grew up in The Hague together with his brothers Mari, who would also become a painter, and Jan, who became a well-known poet-dominee. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam and apprenticed to the Amsterdam painter Cornelis Kruseman. After a study trip through Belgium, France (where he received advice from Meissonier), Italy and Germany, he settled in the city of his teacher in 1847. He lived and worked there until 1869, after which he settled back in his hometown. His specialty was historical genre painting, in which he often had soldiers perform. He also painted representations from the Eighty Years' War and other subjects from national history. In 1872, a stamp issue was published according to his design with the image of King William III. Works by him are in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Teylers Museum Haarlem, Museum Boymans van Beuningen Rotterdam and Het Dordrechts Museum, among others.
