"Aristippe ou de la cour" (1658) by Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (French, 1597 - 1654) First edition by Jean Elsevier in Leiden, published in 1658. This book is scarce as most of 1658 Elsevier first edition books have a different engraving and title page. This one has as title page the re-worked engraving, signed by the artist engraver, that will be used as title page for the 1664 second Elsevier edition published in Amsterdam. Lit.: Tchemerzine, I, 375; Brunet, I, 632. Bound in contemporary vellum. Inscribed later in ink on spine with the book title. Browned and slightly outworn vellum. Vellum bound at some fault. Scuffings, bents, bumpings to corners and extremities. Hole on back bound. Cover has wear such as rubbing, bents and scuffs, a small split on vellum between spine and front bound, lower left corner. Lower left back corner bent. A slight shelf lean. Older pencil inscription with name of previous owner and other markings on front guard page. last leafs slightly bent at corners. Otherwise healthy interior with scattered faint spotting. The book is in French, it has 288 pages, of which 26 table of contents and two of privileges. The book measures 13.5 cm in height, 8 cm in length and 2.7 cm in width. Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (1597 - 1654) was a French libertine writer, highly regarded in his time for the quality of his prose, which is particularly evident in his Letters. This work is dedicated to Queen Christina of Sweden. It can be considered the author's masterpiece. Guez de Balzac studied the inner workings of the court and sought ways to reconcile duty with politics. Aristippus of Cyrene was the founder of the Cyrenaic school of Philosophy and a pupil of Socrates. He was the first Socrate's disciple to took money for his teaching.
