The Impostor (aka Strange Confession) is a 1944 American drama war film directed by Julien Duvivier and starring Jean Gabin.
The Impostor was first released in theaters in the United States in March 1944, and then in France in 1946, a year after the Liberation of France by the Allies.
During its first broadcast on American television, the film was titled Strange Confession.
In 1944, the American press received the film coldly. The New York Times criticized the directing and noted that Jean Gabin "is still sadly waiting for a film worthy of those he made in France."
In an interview with Cinévie, Jean Gabin said: "What the films made in Hollywood are worth, I have no idea. And it doesn't matter. At the moment, they're showing The Impostor in Paris. I won't go see it. When I made it, it was necessary to make it. I made films in the American style, for Americans. They were the ones we needed to reach at the time, and I am happy if I succeeded. If now the French don't like it, they may be right because the circumstances are not the same."
