Large faience amulet in the form of a stylised Udjat (Eye of Horus)
Culture
Ancient Egypt
Dating
Late Period, circa 664–332 BC
Description
Large faience amulet representing a stylised and abbreviated form of the Udjat, or Eye of Horus.
The amulet is rendered in a schematic manner, without the full anatomical detailing of the classical Udjat eye, a variant well attested in Late Period Egyptian amuletic production.
Notably large for this type, the piece features a substantial thickness and a horizontal perforation through the upper section for suspension, indicating it was intended to be worn or mounted prominently.
Udjat amulets symbolized protection, healing and regeneration, and were among the most powerful apotropaic objects in ancient Egyptian belief.
Condition
Intact. Minor surface wear and small manufacturing irregularities consistent with age. No restorations.
Provenance
Old English collection, 1950–1960, acquired on the London art market.
With accompanying certificate.
Dimensions
Width: approximately 16 mm (large size for the type)
