Geoffroy Tory - Champ Fleury, Grolier Club - 1927

Champ Fleury by Geoffroy Tory Translated into English and annotated by George B Ives New York: The Grolier Club 1927 A very good edition of 'Champ Fleury' by Geoffroy Tory. Limited to 390 copies, translated and annotated by George B. Ives, designed, and printed by Bruce Rogers. Aldus praised the original edition for its adaptation of the roman type in its use of the French language. His discussion of the formation of roman capitals by geometric means led to many advances in design in early printing. His models for the capitals, set within a modular grid, displayed an approach to their construction that was unique to Tory, and his commentary critiqued the parallel efforts of the early letterform theorists. Large 4to, bound in quarter vellum, over printed paper covered boards, gilt lettered to spine. Page edges rough trimmed. With the original clamshell box. The contents are complete in xxiii, 208pp, [1]. Condition: Binding is holding firmly and in good condition, lightly rubbed and marked to surfaces, bumped and abraded to extremities/corners and spine ends. Vellum grubby. The box with a few scuffs and marks. Contents are holding firmly and in very good condition, toned and with the occasional smudge or mark. Please see images for further condition.
